Deborah Owhin has dedicated over 10 years towards achieving gender equality. She began her career as a facilitator at Men Stopping Violence before moving on to manage high-risk cases of domestic violence survivors and successfully conducting some of the UK’s first statutory Domestic Homicide Reviews.
In 2013, as part of the UK civil society delegation, she attended the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 57). There, she realised the urgent need for a platform where young women and men could learn and work together to prevent gender inequality, and so started ‘Made Equal’ – a non-profit social initiative that engages, educates and empowers them to eradicate gender inequality.
From a young age Deborah has been passionate about issues facing young women in Africa and is committed to the spread of equality across the continent. She works with Africa-centred organisations, government agencies and is a member of the Nigerian Leadership Initiative. In recognition of her commitment to Africa, she was selected as 1 of 100 RSA UK Diaspora Changemakers.
Deborah is a trustee and advisor for several charities, including Restored, and volunteers with HM Prison Chaplaincy encouraging female inmates on their faith journey since 2010.
Deborah holds a Psychology degree (Honors) from Spelman College, USA.
